Wasps are part of the "hymenoptera order of insects" and thrive well in this area of the Great Desert Basin. Most wasps are social, live in colonies (nests), and usually do not attack unless provoked. They feed on a variety of small insects and plant nectar. With the exception of "yellow jacket" wasps most nests are fabricated above the ground. Some nests can contain up to 200 wasps started by a single female queen.
